EDEXCEL LEVEL 3 BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA OR CERTIFICATE IN ART & DESIGN-PROJECT PROPOSAL

The title of my project would be called ‘The Calm Tunnel’

I have four ideas which I can easily combine or do as an single idea are:

  • I will be working towards to design a new footpath reconstructing either the Greenwich or Woolwich foots paths located under the Thames.
  • Create a bridge to be placed in between one of the bridges on the Thames celebrating the up coming 2012 Olympic in London.
  • Recreating a section or a part of the Battersea Park turning it into a theme park or alternatively designing a park.
  • Create a new type of mall being transported across the Thames calling it the ‘Ship mall’

Out of these four design ideas, I have decided to focus more on reconstructing the new Woolwich foot tunnel which directly beneath the river Thames and work toward creating a model to communicate on presenting my ideas.

To have a successful model and project, I will be looking at a range different elements such as:

  • Different artist, Architects and different photographer to influence to have a starting point.

Looking at: Zaha Hadid, Anthony McCall, and James Terrell…

  • At the history of London and how it has changed.
  • The old maps of Thames ( where it starts and ends and how where it leads)
  • Futurism
  • Different light techniques using colours or ultraviolet lighting
  • Research on plant environmental friendly buildings

Also books can be used to look at the history to find a past events that has happened which could be incorporated in to the final idea.

  • Research into where and how many bridges there are, if one can be replaced, demolished to create something better or creating an entirely new bridge all together placing it over the Thames.

The photographers I will be also looking at are Thomas Demand, James Casebere and Brassai. All of these photographers look at tunnel and how the light communicated the space made of explored.

I should use a range of different range of techniques such as

  • Photoshop ( Photomontage)
  • Drawings of the places visited

Also with the digital media, I should be using range materials to create models. From the simple common materials like wood, plastic, wire and hot glue to hold it place. To the more complex and expensive materials like transparent glass, foam and glass blocks.

Baring this mind, I should break everything down into small weekly tasks for me to follow as a weekly timetable.

  • In week 1, I should complete the project brief and complete my research of London. I should then start my deign ideas to start on looking at contextual research
  • In week 2, have fully rang of images and research on artist, designers and architects. To begin making ideas and sketches in my sketch book recording everything.
  • In week 3, Start on building models communicating with the theme chosen on the project around River Thames. Adding photographs and drawings on Tumblr and annotating as I’m uploading.
  • In week 4, finish building models and painting and improving weaker models. Go back to filling sketch book with contextual .

The techniques I will use are to create photomontages to help communicate my ideas. Also to take sophisticated Photographs controlling with different lighting composition.
